Patriarch of Romania condolence message addressed to His Beatitude Sawa, Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland
Patriarch of Romania condolence message addressed to His Beatitude Sawa, Metropolitan of Warsaw and All Poland
Your Beatitude,

It is with profound sorrow that we have learned of the aircraft crash near the town of Smolensk, western Russia, which led to the tragic death of His Excellency Lech Kaczynski, President of Poland, and of other Polish dignitaries, including Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant clergy, among whom His Eminence Archbishop Miron of Hajnowka and Orthodox General Bishop within the Army of the Republic of Poland. This is all the more sorrowful since the Polish delegation was meant to participate in the 70th anniversary of another painful moment in the history of its country, namely the massacre of thousands of Polish soldiers in Katyn, during the Second World War.

In these moments of grief and sadness, we express – on behalf of the hierarchs, clergy and faithful of the Romanian Orthodox Church – our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the entire Polish nation and pray our Merciful Lord Jesus Christ, Who rose from the dead, to rest in peace the souls of those who died and to comfort the families of those who lost so tragically their relatives.

With brotherly love in Christ,

† Daniel
Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church
