His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel Has Welcomed the Holy Relics of St. Gregory Palamas at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest
The holy relics of St. Gregory Palamas, brought by Most Rev. Panteleimon, Metropolitan of Veria, Naussa and Kampania, have arrived last night, on April 29, 2009, at 8 p.m. at the Patriarchal cathedral in Bucharest. They were welcomed by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, together with Right Rev. Vincenţiu of Ploieşti, patriarchal Vicar Bishop.
The holy relics were received at the Henry Coandă International Airport by Most Rev. Irineu, Metropolitan of Oltenia and by Right Rev. Ambrozie, Bishop of Giurgiu. At the Patriarchal Cathedral, the holy relics were awaited by more than 500 faithful. After they were brought into the cathedral, a liturgical service was performed for the occasion, followed by a sermon by His Beatitude Daniel, who underlined the importance of the arrival of the holy relics of St. Gregory Palamas, at the anniversary of 650 years since the foundation of the Metropolitanate of Wallachia and of 650 years since the passing away of this Holy Hierarch.
Subsequently, Most Rev. Panteleimon spoke, underscoring the importance of this moment for the Metropolitanate of Veria, Naussa and Kampania. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, together with the members of the Standing Meeting of the National Church Council and of the Standing Meeting of the Bucharest Archdiocese, followed by the faithful present at the Patriarchal Cathedral, have then venerated the holy relics.
The holy relics of St. Gregory Palamas will remain at the Cathedral until May 1st, when they will be put on display, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., at the St. Gregory Palamas Church, the chapel of the Politehnica University of Bucharest. They will be taken to the Diocese of Lower Danube, where they will be available for veneration in front of the Diocesan Cathedral in Galaţi. The holy relics were brought into our country with the blessing of His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, at the suggestion of Right Rev. Casian, Bishop of Lower Danube, on the occasion of the proclamation of the veneration, in the Romanian Orthodox Church, of St. Athanasios, Patriarch of Constantinople.
