In the opening of the session, an anniversary moment on the occasion of the passing, on February 4, 2010, of 85 years since the elevation of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the rank of Patriarchate (February 4, 1925). His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel underlined the significance of this historical moment and evoked the memory of the five blessed patriarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church who passed away, Miron Cristea, Nicodim Munteanu, Justinian Marina, Iustin Moisescu and Teoctist Arapasu. Next, because the five patriarchs had the common desire to build a Cathedral for the Salvation of the Nation, the documentary with the title 'The Cathedral for the Salvation of the Nation, Your Gift for Eternity,' produced by the TRINITAS TV station of the Romanian Patriarchate. The film presents the actions of the last two years by the Romanian Patriarchate to create the project needed for the construction of the future Patriarchal Cathedral. According to the calendar set by the appropriate department of the Patriarchal Administration, the construction of the new Patriarchal Cathedral will debut in August 2010, according to the flier titled 'The Cathedral for the Salvation of the Nation, Your Gift for Eternity,' recently edited by the Romanian Patriarchate.
The anniversary moment concluded with the launch of the Encyclopaedia of Romanian Orthodoxy, published at the Publishing House of the Orthodox Biblical and Mission Institute, upon the initiative and with the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel. The work is a premiere for the Romanian Orthodox Church and was put together by a collective of professors and other specialists under the guidance of Rev. Professor Mircea Pacurariu, correspondent member of the Romanian Academy.
During the meeting, the Yearly General Report of the National Church Council concerning the activity of the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2009 was examined. The multiple activities of the Romanian Orthodox Church were evidenced, among which the elevation of six dioceses to the rank of archdiocese and the granting of the honorific title of archbishop to two hierarchs, the 19 canonical visits of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel in Romania and abroad, as well as the pilgrimage organized in Bucharest with the holy relics of St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and Gregory of Nyssa, on the occasion of the feast of St. Demetrios the New, Protector of Bucharest (October 24-28, 2009).
The social-philanthropic work was also presented. In the Romanian Patriarchate there are 394 social-philanthropic centers, among which 88 are for children, 89 for the elderly, 65 for the assistance of families and persons in difficult situations, 92 canteens and social bakeries, 25 health centers, 14 centers for the diagnosis and treatment of special needs, 6 centers for the homeless, 4 centers for the victims of family violence and aggressors, 2 centers for the victims of trafficking in persons, 9 kindergartens and educational centers etc.
