On 30 August 2011, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, received the visit of His Excellency Mr. Spyros Attas, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Bucharest, at the end of his diplomatic mission in Romania.
His Excellency wanted to thank for the support and friendship of the Romanian people and of the Romanian Orthodox Church towards the Cypriot people, hoping to continue and intensify the co-operation between the two Orthodox peoples.
His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel emphasised the traditional good relations between the two peoples with a long rich Christian tradition, expressing his hope that Mr. Ambassador will continue to promote the cultural religious relations between the two countries, as well as by organising pilgrimages to the monasteries of Cyprus and Romania.
During the discussions, both parts tackled themes related to the challenges present in the contemporary society, the efforts that must be made for solving some urgent social issues like secularisation, migration, school abandon etc., as well as the situation of the inhabitants and of the cultural spiritual patrimony in the North of Cyprus.
His Beatitude reaffirmed the solidarity with the Cypriot people, on behalf of the clergy and faithful of the Romanian Orthodox Church, with the hope to solve the issues they are faced with, by protecting the Christian – orthodox patrimony in this region which constitutes a symbol of the Cypriot national spiritual identity.
